What Is an MXF File?

MXF (Material Exchange Format) is a professional container format designed for interoperability between video editing systems, broadcast servers, and archive solutions. It's an open standard (SMPTE 377M) widely used in broadcast, cinema, and professional video production.

MXF as a Container

MXF is a container (or "wrapper"), not a codec. It can hold:

  • Video essence: MPEG-2, AVC/H.264, HEVC/H.265, DNxHD, DNxHR, ProRes, JPEG 2000, and more.
  • Audio essence: PCM, AAC, Dolby, and other formats.
  • Metadata: Timecode, descriptive metadata, rights information.
  • Subtitles/captions: Embedded caption data.

Where MXF Is Used

  • Broadcast: TV stations use MXF for content exchange and playout (AS-11, IMF).
  • Cinema: DCPs use MXF containers for JPEG 2000 video.
  • Camera originals: Sony XDCAM, Panasonic P2, Canon Cinema cameras record to MXF.
  • Archive: MXF's comprehensive metadata makes it suitable for long-term preservation.
  • Post-production: Avid Media Composer uses MXF as its native format.

MXF Variants

Several operational patterns (OP) and application specifications exist:

  • OP1a: Single package, most common for file-based interchange.
  • OP-Atom: Separate files for video and audio, used by Avid.
  • AS-02: Application specification for versioning and segment-based workflows.
  • AS-11: UK DPP delivery specification for broadcast.
  • IMF: Interoperable Master Format, Netflix and studio delivery standard.

MXF File Sizes

MXF file sizes depend on the essence (codec) inside. Example sizes for common configurations:

Essence1 Hour Size
XDCAM HD 50 Mbps~22 GB
DNxHD 185x~82 GB
DNxHR HQX (4K)~250 GB
JPEG 2000 (DCP 2K)~100-150 GB

MXF vs MOV vs MP4

  • MXF: Professional interoperability, comprehensive metadata, broadcast-ready. Complex but complete.
  • MOV: Apple's container, widely supported, simpler structure. Common for ProRes delivery.
  • MP4: Consumer/web standard. Great for distribution, but lacks professional metadata.

Transferring MXF Files

MXF files, especially broadcast masters and DCPs, can be substantial. Handrive handles MXF transfer like any other format:

  • No per-GB fees: Transfer 100+ GB MXF files without cost.
  • Direct P2P: No cloud intermediary means faster transfer and better privacy.
  • Any file type: MXF, AAF, ProRes — all transfer the same way.
